Shunsuke Koya

Shunsuke Koya is a Japanese architect based in Helsinki, a member of SAFA (Finnish Association of Architects) educated in Aalto University (Helsinki) and Meiji University (Tokyo).
The appreciation of material properties is the prominent philosophy lying at the core of the practice. He listens to the materials and let them form architecture or products, minimizing material consumption and giving them timeless qualities. He calls this idea “Genius Materia” (the spirit of the material), and the approach to design is documented in his master thesis. (Full thesis available here.)
